Can a Veterinarian Treat My Pet with CBD?

Pet CBD products are out on the market today. And, if you’re a happy CBD user as a human, you may want to pass along those potential benefits to your pet. Especially, if your furry friend gets anxious, or misses you a little too much when you’re gone, you may look to pet CBD for help.

However, it’s a challenge to get your vet to weigh in on the conversation around CBD use. The majority can’t treat your pet with CBD at all. They may not even be able to recommend you give it a try on your own. As far as prescribing it as a medication though, that’s not happening.

Well, it’s not happening almost everywhere. Nevada just made some big changes that could pave the way for vets to get more involved when it comes to CBD and your pet.

Taking strides forward

As of October 1, 2021, a new Nevada law allows veterinarians in the state to treat animals using cannabinoids like CBD. Specifically, they can administer any hemp and cannabidiol products that are below 0.3 percent THC.

This is significant for many reasons. First, having your pet’s vet be able to not only advise the use of CBD, but administer it themselves means more accuracy in treatment. It also means a better correlation between actual illness and hemp-derived products. Individual consumers won’t just buy a pet CBD product and use it, but rather their vet will suggest it in correlation to a specific issue, such as epilepsy.

What’s holding up the process

Although many veterinarians may sell CBD products on site, they’re not allowed to administer the products themselves. This is because most CBD products haven’t gotten approval by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for animal use.

Even with promising research connected to CBD as a treatment for certain animal issues, the FDA has not yet given their green light for veterinarians to use the products on pets. Owners can purchase the products and administer them at home though.

Why consumers already like pet CBD

There’s already plenty of consumer interest when it comes to CBD and pets. Anecdotal evidence from proud users show the products may help with anxiety and stress, just like it can with humans. It may help pets curb their nervous barking, manage reactions to loud noises, and keep them calmer when left home alone.

CBD for dogs has jumped ahead as the more popular pet to treat, but more consumers are exploring its potential benefits for cats as well.

The best way to administer CBD to your pet, if you’ve decided to give it a try, is through a tincture. This particular type of product is easy to give to your pet since you’re only placing a few drops in their mouth. It’s quick, and most pet-specific products have a flavor that makes them want to try it.
