As more and more exploration into the benefits of using CBD gets done, researchers are making big discoveries. One of the more recent studies pairs CBD and Alzheimer’s Disease for some exciting results.
CBD and Alzheimer’s
Working with researchers from the Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University, CBD Global Sciences, Inc. released a study that demonstrated the potential for CBD to stop common triggers for Alzheimer’s Disease.
Working with lab mice, this study demonstrated that high doses of CBD had the potential to restore the function of key proteins that work to reduce plaque buildup in the brain. It’s this buildup that can lead to Alzheimer’s. It interferes with the communication between neurons in the brain. When this happens, there’s a higher risk for brain cell death.
Introducing CBD helped normalize the levels of the protein that leads to the build up. The CBD also helped, during the study, to reduce levels of IL-6. This protein may cause varying amounts of inflammation in Alzheimer’s patients.
Paving the way for positive change
These results present a positive step forward in the possibilities CBD can have in the medical community. As of right now, Alzheimer’s has no cure, and it’s an irreversible and deadly disease.
Alzheimer’s may impact as many as 5.5 million Americans who are 65 and older. The disease is the sixth leading cause of death in the U.S. as well.
As a progressive brain disorder, Alzheimer’s starts in the part of the brain responsible for forming memories. As those cells begin to die, the disease moves to other parts of the brain to do further damage. Moving along, the disease slowly destroys memory and thinking skills. It eventually takes away the ability to manage even simple tasks.
The most common form of dementia in older adults, Alzheimer’s blocks the connection between nerve cells in the brain through the formation of abnormal clumps or amyloid plaques. This current study shows CBD preventing the formation of these clumps, keeping brain cells intact longer.
The start of a long road
The results of this study maintain a common sentiment that we’re only scratching the surface of what CBD can offer the medical community. While these particular results were only documented in mice, this study is yet another example of the potential CBD, and other cannabinoids, may have. Further testing and studying is absolutely necessary to establish the efficacy of results like these. However, it is progress toward understanding what CBD could do to improve the health of many individuals.
