“Are you the stoner who is constantly losing their keys? Or you meet someone new and immediately forget what their name was?” are a couple questions to start Riley’s video about how cannabis affects memory. If you struggle with those things, don’t worry. You’re not alone! Riley does too, and she is here to explain why.
THC and CB1 Receptors
The part of the brain that controls memory is called the hippocampus. The hippocampus has a large amount of CB1 receptors. When THC binds to these cannabinoid receptors, it inhibits the release of other neurotransmitters. Some of the receptors that are blocked, like glutamate, control our short term memory.
Reference and Long Term Memory
While cannabis can have some effects on our short term memory, the good news is that it does not seem to affect our reference memory or our long term memory. With the help of this information, researchers are actively working to see if cannabis can assist with treatments for Alzheimer’s Disease.
