The hemp plant contains a host of beneficial materials as is. Yet, some people prefer to consume only the purest form of its most famous compound – cannabidiol.
More commonly known as CBD, the compound can potentially treat anxiety along with many other conditions. In its purest form, CBD refines into an isolate, which is a powder with no taste or smell.
The isolate advantage
Cannabidiol isolates have no measurable levels of THC, the highly regulated substance in cannabis. Isolate powder is often consumed dusted over food, mixed in a tincture, or manufactured into capsules. You can also infuse it in oils or combine it with honey or agave sweetener.
Isolate extraction
To create CBD isolate requires extensive equipment and experienced operators to complete the extraction process. It all begins by drying the hemp, then grinding it up before extracting CBD oil. The oil is then refined to remove contaminants. From there, it’s subjected to a distillation process. This separates out and captures a variety of compounds.
While there are a few different methods when it comes to extraction, the use of ethanol is pretty common. This specific method recycles about 85 percent of the ethanol, making it both economical and environmentally friendly. To begin, the plant material gets placed into an extractor where it’s saturated with ethanol. After the plant waxes dissolve and the CBD gets extracted, the plant material undergoes a final evaporation step. This removes the ethanol from the hemp completely.
Natural and versatile
Despite a lengthy processing, CBD isolate is a superior product for two reasons. It’s all natural and very versatile.
Devoid of terpenes
CBD isolate stays completely natural throughout its processing. Its white, crystalline appearance is the result of having had all the excess plant matter removed. It is also devoid of terpenes, the compound that gives hemp products their scent and flavor.
As a relatively new product on the market, we’re still learning how best to consume CBD isolate. While the pure nature of isolate is its own attraction, some consumers may prefer it in a different form. For a more affordable option, there’s full-spectrum CBD. This is a whole-plant extract that combines compounds so is less pure. As the market continues to mature, both products have a good chance of developing their own following. Currently, full-spectrum products remain more popular.
Full of versatility
Because of its lack of taste and powdery texture, it’s easy to combine CBD isolate with foods. You can add it to a smoothie, sprinkle it on avocado toast, or even put it in your favorite BBQ sauce. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can infuse other existing oils with it. To feel its effects faster, you can even place the powder under your tongue and let it dissolve.
